Verdant Global Week 3 Boti Community Blog
Verdant Global Boti community summer school second week ended so let's look back on what was achieved. The games and other extramural activities were moved to the morning instead of the afternoon with the objective of attracting more kids at 8 o'clock. Indeed the teams which had more members were more likely to win the games. They're organized on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Additionally, creative activities encouraging waste management were added on the Tuesday and Thursday morning.
The courses continued as usual from 9am to 12noon except for Friday where an ICT session was organized by one of our partners, Young at Heart Ghana. Additionally, we have planned an awareness event for next week Thursday, 16th August aiming at the entire community as part of the International Youth Day 2018.
The games had the expected impact and an acceptable portion of the children actively participated. Some games were requiring precision, others speed and decoding skills. The creative activities started slowly because of the lack of material and the low mean age of the kids presents in the morning. However, plastic bottles were sorted by size and the kids gave their opinion on what should be built using the bottles. Some suggested a chair, some a boat, a dustbin and a bicycle. We will try to make all these wishes come true.
Concerning the lessons, the program for math and English was adapted thanks to another of our partners. The science courses continued and the kids now started speaking about global warming. The previous courses on energy, light, solar system and green house effect being an introduction to this chapter. The ICT session organized by our partner was a great success. The kids were divided in 5 groups and each group had access to a smartphone. They played with an app featuring Ananse the Teacher. They red the story then had to answer questions. In the end they all started to do the job of an architect, drawing plans and then a model of what they wished to see in the community. A big house, a hospital and a stadium were modeled and everyone had fun. Finally, the activity planned for next week will teach the villagers how to keep records of what they buy and sell via our awareness event. We will also show them a technic for composting.
The afternoon will end with a large football match opposing the community youth and the volunteers.
In conclusion this third week of school was a success and even if less kids attempt the courses than during the first days, their number stabilized and those who come learn and participate very well.
